Rainbow moon

The feint rainbow effect around the near full moon this evening gave the moon an appearance similar to the Helix Nebula. Well I thought so anyway.

March Moon

Another full moon, and another perfect evening for a full moon fire.

Wolf Moon

The Wolf Moon, the first full Moon of the new cycle, and what a doozy; a radiant Moon high in a crisp clear sky, with not even the gentlest of breeze, perfect conditions for a fire. I've always found, no matter the reason, sitting round a fire such a natural act, a real human act the transcends time or place, and one of a suit of activities which connect us to the ancestors; people have sat/gathered around a fire since people mk1. Fires have always been an thing in our social group too, frequent happenings, and it was rare to spend time by a fire alone; I tried to remember the last time I sat with others round the fire; I couldn't; nor could I remember a lot of other 'last times' I.......whatever. That led to musing an uncomfortable thought I'd had bubbling; I've had a plan throughout the pandemic, a strategy, although, I haven't a cogent exit strategy. And why would I? You have virologists saying we're entering a period of a few years when covid'll be endemic, a media narrative of getting on with it...living with covid, and the government's suggestion it could soon relax restrictions; Whilst at the same time, my wife's being invited to have a forth jab and the government's behavioural advice to the clinically vulnerable remains unchanged; think Jonah Hill in 'Take him to the Greek' gif.  I'm getting the feeling like the helicopter's leaving the embassy and some of us are going to be left behind.

Full Moon

I've been marking the full Moon with a fire for decades. Occasionally the weather tries to thwart my plans, in which case I cut my coat according to my cloth. Tonight was one of those nights. The weather wizards had predicted sustained rain, and as the sun sank so the clouds rolled in and the air told you rain was approaching and the wizards were right. So tonight I marked the full Moon with a small fire in my Ghillie base. It was lovely out. Half an hour passed and I stopped feeding the fire, as the flames died so the rain began to fall, and it wasn't long before it was lashing down. Perfect timing.

Last full moon of the year

The sky was for the most part clear for the last full moon of the year, and it was cold too. The moon shone majestically. I'd had to settle for reduced fires last few full moons. The sense of openness around the fire was exaggerated by us having hard cut our Hazel trees in autumn and more so by our neighbour removing the thick mature mixed deciduous hedge that bordered our properties, bummer really, it's dense twisted branches and seasonal berries were popular with so many birds. I'll plant anew, that's the plan anyway. The fire burnt bright, the best fire I'd had in ages and I enjoyed it's warmth and dancing light. Well. What a truly shite year it's been, pandemic, brexit, a sense of profound political, ideological and social change, coupled with the appreciation that swathes of my country folk are either cognitively lacking or emphatically deficient, or both. Worst of all the understanding that there's absolutely no chance of the social or environmental changes we required whilst society is structured as it is and people are arses, only the illusions of change. There are things I'm still grateful for mind, some I'm really grateful for, and I for those I give my humble and heartfelt thanks.

August full moon

A messy moon, representing a messed up evening. I was hoping to get out and see some bands at a local venue, and then have my full moon fire afterwards, though the fates had other plans...as they often do.  Still, it was a nice evening for a fire, which was some solace.

June's Moon

I said the common was a magical place, and it is, although it's also a very eerie strange place too, and I understand that's a commonly held feeling by people who've walk here. I walk a lot and only a handful of places fill me with the uncomfortable feelings that the common can. It often has an subtle air of foreboding about it, hidden away in the background, just out of sight. There's the feeling of eyes always upon you, and the frequent need to look behind you is overwhelming, unlike anywhere I've ever been. Most people who know the common would say the same.  Weird, it's ostensibly a lovely tract of common land, that's well trodden and much loved, though there's always something that stimulates your alertness, often taking you to the edge of flight or fight it can manifest so intensely. So with that in mind, you can imagine what the common feels like at night, yup, it's a proper scary place. That's where I went tonight to take another poor full moon photo, and it was proper scary. June's full Moon.

No moon in sight

I know I said I try to to get a photo of every full moon this year, though tonight the thick blanket of cloud which smothered the sky ensured I was to be thwarted. So here's a photo of my full moon fire instead.
