Spoon

I've been practicing bushcraft since before I knew it was called bushcraft, and in all those years I'd never carved a wooden spoon. So I borrowed a crook knife off one of my boys and rectified that, and was pleasantly surprised by my efforts. Not bad for a first attempt, eh?

Whittle

It's amazing how one's eye can so often pick out what's not natural in the natural world. As we walked through the stands this morning a piece of wood or a stick about 10m away amongst the leaf litter caught my eye, ostensibly a piece of wood, though as I drew closer it was a whittled piece of wood. Turned out to be a half finished wooden spoon. Some one had been practising their bushcraft skills, they'd completed the basic blank, though not yet begun in the bowl. Definitely wasn't carved this year, could be a few years old in fact. Nice.

Wooden deer

A wooden doe suns herself amongst Holiday Hill's stands.

What a hoot.

Someone has carved this wonderful Owl on a stump alongside one of the paths in bungalow land. The photo doesn't really give an accurate impression of scale, it's a mature trees stump and the whole thing stands about 2m high. It's so cool that people take the time and make the effort to produce street art, particularly when it's done out of the way, where the surprise of finding art packs an even bigger punch. More surprise art, I say. Fantastic!
